I think you're misunderstanding me. I'm not saying China is building an army to fight over space. Nor am I saying China is building spacecraft for spacewar with its spaceenimies (ooooh. Don't like that one. Too many e's. I digress.).

I'm saying that, with the political climate what it is, we could easily get ourselves into a new space race--and new action on the ground because of it.

I'm also saying that, as hilarious as it is, this happened:

Yeah apparently they just grabbed a stock photo... oops.

I'm ok with a space race though. I think it's good in some ways.

I completely agree. A little healthy competition is great, and it's really great if it's in science.

Really? The only 'racing' they will do is to militarize space.

No one 'races' for science. Or rather, no one pays for that.

It's the diplomats and statespeople's job to prevent war, not exploration minded scientists.

If we are going to war with China we are going to do so whether or not we weaponize space.

Who gives a shit if we put phasers and photon torpedoes on the space shuttle. We can already nuke the fuck out of each other.

The small number of satellites that have already been destroyed by weaponry has created a very large amount of 'space junk' which just floats out there. This junk then damages other satellites or anything else we put up there.

That is to say, any militarization of space will quickly make 'near-space' completely useless to human utility. Heck, we're already half-way there just from a few tests. More weapons in space means more tests means more space junk.

Besides which, anyone who sets up a space-based anti-ballistic missile system is going to massively increase the likelihood of nuclear war.
