Default Modern Pharma is a business

Quote:
The drugs don't work: a modern medical scandal

The doctors prescribing the drugs don't know they don't do what they're meant to. Nor do their patients. The manufacturers know full well, but they're not telling.

This should surprise no one. Everything I've read on the topic is a horror story. Pharmaceutical drugs are sold by massive advertising (more dollars spent on advertising than R&D with Pharma companies) and the trials are rigged (good trails get published, bad trials/failures are just hidden).

Doctors are increasingly becoming little more than sales reps for big Pharma.

I couldn't agree more. Except with the title: it's worse than a business, it's a scam and a lethal one too.

After plowing through that book review it sounded like the author simply discovered what's common knowledge about most industries. No industry lobbies government for regulation that benefits the masses, it does so to enhance its own markets, reduce competition and facilitate growth.

Healthcare ought not to be permitted to operate like a 'normal business'.

I'm okay with caveat emptor as a standard in business, but with healthcare, I think that's entirely unacceptable bordering on criminal action.

All you need is an effective solution to overcome human greed, mostly bent politicians and their civil servant lackeys. Perhaps a protest march.........

Considering that the actions and inaction of this industry is altering the evolution of diseases that could very well threaten to exterminate our species, I wholeheartedly agree.

the problem here is not only due to big pharma but to modern psychiatry. Today many medications are prescribed by shrinks to treat patients without much regards to their dangerous side effects nor any consideration of alternative treatments.

It is no surprise that this scandal about anti-depressants is popping up now, and I suspect we will soon hear about issues with anti-psychotics. Some psychiatrists have already started to voice concerns, but their calls have so far fell on deaf ears.

Universal healthcare and a regulated pharmaceutical industry seems to work very well outside the USA.
