Default Russian skeleton, story of improvement

This "skeleton"

is a sport I have never heard of before, and neither have most Russians. And yet, our country is apparently climbing to the top in it, on the world stage...

Our skeletonists were 22nd in Salt Lake City in 2002; 15th in Turin; then, in Vancouver, a Russian was on the podium for the first time, as Aleksandr Tretyakov took Bronze for the men's team

and now, in Sochi, not only does Tretyakov take the Gold for Russia

but Elena Nikitina becomes the first Russian woman on the skeleton podium, winning Bronze

Does not seem like such a hard sport (but what would I know of it? hehe), kind of reminds me of the sleds children used to ride down slopes on, though, today, blow up "tube" sleds are more in fashion around here

lol It is safer, apparently

Frankly, I think these Olympics are going great, so far. We are in 3d place, overall. Not bad.

Yes, Evgeny Plyushenko acted like an ass, waiting too long with his stupid injury, so that he could not be replaced by the younger Kovtun, thus perhaps sabotaging his country's own figure skating team. And yes, the hockey team has just lost to the Americans. They are a strong team too, it happens

Regardless of all that though, I think the Sochi Olympics is doing a wonderful thing for Russia. I have just read about how boys in Khanty-Mansiysk, in Siberia are now taking up snowboarding, after seeing it for the first time on TV, in a broadcast from Sochi

I think this is great. This is what Olympic Games are supposed to be about, inspiring youth

Yes, you're doing well. Although Norway are doing better per person.

Well, they are a winter nation. Germany is another very strong winter team. Canada too.

Well, yes, when described like that, it does sound rather frightening, actually

Luge is feet first, and a different event.

Okay. The sled looks the same though. Apparently its a different sport if you lay down in a different direction?

I think this is all absurd, but hey, that's just me.

There are a number of differences.

But it's hardly the least dissimilar sport that has different events for it.
