Default I was RIGHT! :D

Hey, Nick, you recall, months back, we were talking about national sports vs. club sports and you were trying to convince me that, in national sports, the athletes and coaches should be all homegrown, and I told you that is the past and buying and trading of sportspeople between countries is the future?

Well, I am again being proven right, this time, in connection with running sports:

Quote:
By the end of this season, the Russian athletic team plans to naturalize runners from Kenya and Ethiopia who specialize in medium and long distances. This was announced by head coach Valentin Maslakov, who added that negotiations are already under way with the athletes.
"We are talking with medium- and long-distance Kenyan and Ethiopian runners, and I think that, in the near future—already this year—young athletes will come to us from these countries," Maslakov said in an interview with P-sport. According to him, the African athletes will arrive with their coaches, but Russian specialists will also be involved in their training.

This article also lists other naturalized athletes who have won medals for Russia.

I told you. This is the future. Not saying it is necessarily a good thing, it means the richer countries could, potentially, buy up all the talented star athletes. Not fair. But, so is life, in general, I guess

Irony, in a not-too-immigrant friendly country.

Firstly, in what way was I wrong, if I said that I thought they should be home-grown? There is a difference between saying "should be" and "are". Do you understand the difference.

Secondly, in football the vast vast vast majority of players for national teams grew up in the country of the national team that they play for. So your article doesn't say anything about that, and long may it continue. But I'm aware that it might end, one day.

Thirdly, buying athletes is a waste of money, since there is no prestige involved for the nation who buys the players.

It's very irritating when you come on to gloat about me being wrong, when nothing I've said on the subject is proven wrong by anything which you post.

Indeed, and non-white ones too, guys like Holden. It surprises me too. But, you know, Russia has long accepted foreigners who gave her some benefit back. European architects helped build Saint Petersburg. Before that, in preparation for conquest of Siberia, German Prussian officers, best soldiers of that time, were invited to Russia to train our army, so even ended up commanding units, and, as a reward, were allowed to take ownership of land in new Siberian territories and settle there with their families.

I was right, because I said this will happen, and it is and will, more and more, in football too.

And I've never denied it, and I don't deny it about football either.
But I think football should be congratulated that it has reached 2013 and it is still the way it is, with the vast vast majority of players playing for the national team that they come from. Don't you agree, YouYourselfAndYou?

I agree. But I still say it will not be like that two decades from now.

Okay. I'm glad you said something nice about football in that first sentence even though you don't think that that nice thing will be able to resist the trend.

Another nice thing to say about football is that shirt sponsors are banned in competitive international matches, although they can't stop the shirt producer from paying a country to use its product. So there is a sort of shirt sponsor, but only of sportsware manufacturers, and it's not sprawled across the chest, but situated on the top right corner.
