During this century, they've now reached the semi-final in most of the big competitions they've been too, so over the years they've churned out top teams, despite their modest population.

However, that's history - if we're talking about the current situation, I'd say Germany are the best team of those four. France are second, and then, Wales ahead of Portugal in my opinion, despite Portugal's much superior history as a football team.

Whoever wins the France v Germany semi-final will, I'd say, be the favourites in the final, whether that is against Wales or Portugal.
Of the 50 countries listed as part of Europe, Portugal is 16th largest. Not large, but definitely not small - definitely middling and basically average. And they even include Russia's whole population as part of Europe.

I didn't use the adjective 'small' about Portugal's population, but I did say that they'd punched above their population weight, which, when the 16th largest country in Europe reaches the last 4 in a competition, I think is a fair assessment.

I used the adjective 'modest' about Portugal's population size. I stand by the suggestion that the 16th largest country in Europe can be said to have a modest population size, others may differ, all a matter of definitions.

217,248 Russians at this time already have signed a petition demanding for our government to disband our national football team: https://www.change.org/p/%D1%82%D1%8...ons_share_skip

The government has already responded, saying the request will be sent for consideration to the Ministry of Sports: https://www.change.org/p/%D1%82%D1%8...%8F/u/17143736

Yep, France won even though Germany looked to be the stronger team.

As they say, that's the way the ball bounces.

Now it France against Portugal with most eyes on Portugal's Ronaldo, Sunday, 3 PM US eastern time.

As the Premier of China once said, 'what's a million people?'

In the context of Russia, 600,000 is a tiny percentage (less than 1%).

I guess this is what you are talking about. I had only heard some vague references to bad play and misconduct:
