There doesn't seem to be any trend in this data. Not geography, not GDP, not HDI, not population. I guess that tells that sports is very individual and that the distribution of top athletes, i.c. gold medalists is completely independent of the classification in countries. It's pure luck when an exceptional athlete is born in country X, Y or Z.

Edit : I forgot to translate the countries names. I'll leave it alone now because it'd screw up the table formatting that took so much time. Most should be obvious. And if not, ask away.

Haha
But when you say G/cap, you mean G/million-people, don't you?

Thank you for that table - China has done very badly, that's all there is to it.

This is no criticism in any way, but I've pointed out that we should be aware of the fact that Grenada are one gold medal away from not even finishing in that table, but because of that gold they finish top.

So their result can be called rather lucky.

I make this point, because I want to stress that with the vast majority of the countries, the result is NOT based on luck, and it's very fair. Grenada is the exception rather than the rule, in this case.

Default Re: Olympics

You can calculate and recalculate all you want. It does not change the fact that Russia took more medals this year than in Beijing, even if we are 4th instead of 3d this time.

Here is Olympic champion and Gold medallist Roman Vlasov greeted at Tolmachevo Airport in his home city, Novosibirsk

(A Uighur restaurant in Novosibirsk vows to serve Vlasov free meals for life... Uighur restaurant... Only in Siberia lol)

With his mother

And, of course, the media

Meanwhile runner Yuria Zaripova and weightlifter Andrei Demanov from Tatarstan arrived at Second Terminal of Kazan Airport

Because it was at 3:20 at night, not every fan could be there to meet the sportspeople, however there was a large crowd, including Sport, Youth, and Tourism Minister of Tatarstan Khalil Shaikhuddinov (with microphone)

who noted that it is the second time in a row that the Olympic Gold in the 3000 meter hurdle category is taken for Russia by a Tatarstani sportswoman (Gulnara Galkina-Samitova won in 2008 in Beijing). He also addessed Demanov, saying his fourth place finish was nothing to be ashamed of, especially since he competed with an injury.

There were young people holding large Russian and Tatar flags behind the sportspeople

and more with flowers

But I especially like this article in Komsomolskaya Pravda by Otar Kushanashvili, the title translates roughly as "Go to hell with your medal plan!"

He talks about how some in the government, including Minister of Sport, Tourism, and Youth of Russia Vitaliy Mutko, do not appreciate our sportspeople and spit on their efforts and victories. Mutko has earlier said the Olympic team failed to reach their medal plan. Other officials also said our sportspeople underperformed at the Olympics.

Otar reminds us of great obstacles overcome by our sportspeople, for example cyclist Olga Zabelinskaya

who won two Bronze medals

despite a heart defect she was born with.

"This", he says, "is what I tell my children about. Not, how many less medals we have then the Americans, or how many more more than Equatorial Guinea!"

http://kazan.kp.ru/daily/25930.5/2880055/

I agree.

I saw her in the race that Dutch woman Marianne Vos won. Very smart girl. She knew she didn't have a chance against the other two (Vos and a Brit) but she cooperated with them nevertheless because it assured her of a 3rd place and thus a bronze medal. I didn't even know about her heart condition.
