1. As I said above, the retinue feature is integral to the Byzantines and totally historically accurate for them. I have no problem with that.

2. The old Anglo-Saxon Fyrd is exactly the same thing as the feudal "levy" that is used in the game. It is NOT a regular standing army of any kind.

3. The earliest appearance of a 'retinue' like feature in English history would be the 15th century during the War of the Roses. Anything before then was a feudal levy or mercenaries. The first English full-time regular army regiment wasn't formed until the mid-17th century (the Life Guards I believe). The only debatable unit would be the existence of the Yeoman Warders (aka Beefeaters) but they were never used on any battlefied and served only as royal court guards (and occasional police-like duties).
