It just reduces the competion to one between doctors and chemists. Whoever has the best (most expensive) doping system wins.

That's not a competition between athletes, that's a competition between pharmaceuticals.

That makes it an equipment issue.

In which case it isn't a competition between athlete's prowess or ability.

It is if they're all equipped the same.

But they are not. It is a competition between doctors & chemists.

Wouldn't that be a parallel with shoe, racquet, food and other suppliers who tout their supposedly superior products to athletes for purposes of competition enhancement? Other than the moral judgement of illegality for drugs I can't determine any difference.

The issue is what is the equipment for. Equipment falls into two categories: necessary for playing the sport and necessary for protecting the player. In the necessary for the Sport category you have bats and rackets. You just need these items to play game. In the protecting the player category you have helmets, pads, shoes, and etc... While technically you could play the sport without these people would get seriously injured. Since this ancient Rome we really don't want that.

While yes these items have been engineered in such a way that allows them to enhance the player, you still need these items. However steroids are not needed for the play of the sport. All they do is artificially enhance. A certain bat may enhance a player, but when it boils down to it you need a bat to play baseball. A steroid does not fall in this category of need.

And yes, it is a moral judgment. The world is filled with arbitrary moral judgments. That does not mean they are wrong.

They damage people's health, and that is why the Olympic Committee bans them.
If athletes want to run with drugs, let them organise their own races (I doubt many people would be interested, because spectators want to see natural performances).

But the Olympic Committee has banned enhancing drugs from its events, and it is entitled to do so. Drug users are trespassers - there is nothing to stop them from competing in their own privately organised events.

By that logic should food, vitamins, exercise and sleep be regulated?

Well vitamins are regulated, or at least we drug test and if you take the wrong supplement you are out.

Food, exercise, and sleep are human necessities. Hard to regulate that. However, they easily fall all fall under either of the necessary categories. All three are both necessary for the safety of the player and necessary for playing the sport.
