Default USA is a Prescription Nation

Quote:
So Young and So Many Pills

More than 25% of Kids and Teens in the U.S. Take Prescriptions on a Regular Basis

...
These days, the medicine cabinet is truly a family affair. More than a quarter of U.S. kids and teens are taking a medication on a chronic basis, according to Medco Health Solutions Inc., the biggest U.S. pharmacy-benefit manager with around 65 million members. Nearly 7% are on two or more such drugs, based on the company's database figures for 2009.

Doctors and parents warn that prescribing medications to children can be problematic. There is limited research available about many drugs' effects in kids. And health-care providers and families need to be vigilant to assess the medicines' impact, both intended and not. Although the effects of some medications, like cholesterol-lowering statins, have been extensively researched in adults, the consequences of using such drugs for the bulk of a patient's lifespan are little understood.

Indeed, its not like approved prescription drugs have ever been found out to be harmful when given to people other than for whom they were tested for.

Put this in context with the infamous US "war on drugs" this seems like comedy if it wasn't such a tragedy.

That is to say, drugs are always evil, except when they come with a label and make massive profits for multinational pharmaceutical companies.

Laugh a little. Cry a little.

Then get a prescription to cure both.

Under such license even suicide by those drugs is socially accepted as accidental but not insurable.

Prescription inflicted suicides are just collateral damage in the war for corporate profits.

I have a friend who started smoking pot when she was twelve, and started taking Prozac when she was fourteen.

They fucked her up equally.

I don't mind that people do drugs, I really don't.

I just hate it when people pretend that some of them won't hurt you.

More importantly, I think that the way we treat alcohol is more dangerous than any of these prescribed drugs.

Odd that religious types who support only their gods taking a life are legally comfortable with 'accidental' deaths from prescription drugs. Let a heroin addict OD and they're up in arms about drugs being a threat to whatever scrambled form of morality they subscribe to.

Most studies do agree that alcohol causes more large-scale social harm than any other drug, by pretty much any definition you want to use.

One word: polypharmacy.

Although (some of) that has to do with the relative legality and access of alcohol.
