I think one thing about arguing about Britney Spears is that your really not talking about music. Sure the main product people buy is a album but much of the appeal has much more to do with style, personality, sex appeal, and trends. If her albums had come out before the days of MTV I would bet that she never would have sold nearly as many albums. Much of the money she pulls in actually comes from shirts, posters, clothing accessories, and all sorts of other products. Britney doesn't play a instrument, she doesn't write most of her songs, the sound of her albums is all due to her producers, and the actually use all sorts of effects to manipulate the sound of her voice. If she was to sing without those it would sound quite different. But really when you talk about popular music much of this is always a major part of it rock music included.

Compositions.

Jon Lord had a classical music upbringing and it shows. Deep Purple songs are easily arranged for symphonic orchestras and JL has even actually written symphonies. +2
The same, though to a somewhat lesser extent goes for Rush : +1

I like 70's music with 20 minutes songs. Some bands were great at those, and some weren't. Yes was awful in that regard : -2
There's a couple of bands in this list I didn't know and have been checking out. The first one is Sonic Youth : nothing really wrong with it but zero originality. Everything they do I can point to an older band that did it before and did it better. Nice frontwoman though. Nevertheless : -1

Not at all. My point there is to note that the only available pseudo-objective metric available is non-functional for that purpose - Spears being an illustration of that point.

I will however generally assert that sales levels of any given artist is a generally decent measure of general 'popularity'.

That's her. I'm not confused. That music just 'creeps me out'. I'm not saying she isn't talented, I'm saying I don't like it at all and want to run from the room to escape.

Though, I admit I might be confused about Greendruid being the person I know who was a big fan and played it often.

Oh I do like Nina! And I particularly enjoy the sweet gutteral sound of German lyrics!

Sonic Youth did a lot of things in regards to odd tuning and basically taking guitars apart and manipulating them to create new sounds. I like a lot of their noisier songs.

Good old Nina Hagen Brings back good memories

I can't believe Michael ditched Björk, either. The girl's a genius.

I like her as well. If I didn't listen to music that was odd in some way it would severely limit my collection.

Michael has oddly eclectic tastes in most things and makes no apologies for being entirely subjective on the matter of music.

+2 to Queen for the Bohemian Rhapsody - a masterpiece of pop culture!
+1 to the Animals for the House of the Rising Sun - one of my all time favs.

I'm open to reassessment. What should I listen to ?
