But this global climate change stuff can't be real because it would be very inconvenient to me if I had to admit to myself that all my favorite energy wasting habits are destroying the world. Therefore, global climate change must not be real. It is unacceptable!

I think there's more to it than that. Even the most hardcore redneck has a rational self-interest in getting the mpg of his supercharged V8 truck from 10 to 15 mpg (or whatever) for the simple reason that it's cheaper that way. I think it's the vast complexity and the enormity of the problem(s) that scare people. They want -or are trained by television to expect- simple answers and there aren't any. Most scientific contexts for ecological issues are just ignored by the general populace but this one is continuous on the forefront of what passes for public debate. I think it's the sense of impotence that triggers that violent response.
